Aluminum Hydroxide
Aluminum hydroxide is an antacid available in over-the-counter (OTC) medicines that relieves heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and upset stomach. Aluminum hydroxide can be found in heartburn medicines that contain more than one antacid active ingredient. It also can be in medicines that not only treat heartburn, but other symptoms as well, such as gas.
Aluminum hydroxide is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is safe and effective when used according to label directions. Antacids containing aluminum hydroxide may interact with certain prescription drugs. If you are taking a prescription medicine, do not take an OTC aluminum hydroxide antacid without checking with your doctor or other healthcare professional.

Tips for Medicines with Aluminum Hydroxide
When using aluminum hydroxide-containing medicines, it is important to know that:
- You should never take more medicine or for a longer period of time than what the label says.
- Certain heartburn medicines may also contain the active ingredient magnesium hydroxide. Check the label and speak with your doctor if you are on a magnesium-restricted diet.
Do not use if:
- You have kidney disease, unless you are under the advice and supervision of a doctor.

Ask a healthcare professional before use if:
- You are taking a prescription medicine.
Stop use and ask a doctor if:
- Your symptoms last more than two weeks.
